5 Games to Play With Zero Prep, With Friends or Family

An impromptu evening, a get-together that's running long, a car ride: here are games that need no setup, no rules to re-read, and nothing to dig out of a closet.

1. The classic dice game (5 dice, 13 categories)

5 dice, a score sheet, 13 turns. Probably the most complete game on this list: quick enough for an impromptu round (15 to 20 minutes), but with enough real choices — which dice to keep, which category to sacrifice — to stay interesting after many plays. 2. Tic-tac-toe

A nine-box grid scribbled on a napkin or in an app, and you're off. Extremely fast, but shallow: between two players who know the optimal strategy, it always ends in a draw. Good for killing 30 seconds, not for filling an evening.

3. Categories (the "scattergories" style game)

A random letter, a list of categories (name, animal, country, profession…), and everyone races to write a word starting with that letter in each category. Needs only something to write with, and works just as well with 3 players as with 10.

4. Never Have I Ever

Going around in a circle, each person names something they've never done; anyone who has raises a finger (or takes a sip, depending on the crowd). Purely verbal, zero equipment, and a surprisingly good way to learn things about friends you thought you knew well.

5. Liar's Dice

Each player hides a few dice under a cup and bids on how many of a given value are out there across the whole table, bluffing along the way. Faster and more luck-driven than the classic 5-dice game, but just as quick to explain — a good pick if you want something even more lightweight.
